General feedback for the all four regions include
  1. Researches and universities in each region should be considered at the regional capacity of staff

Feedback from Dr Berhanu on the buzz group questions/ comments
  • LIVES is not all about research.The research is meant to support the development. When interventions are implemented we super impose action resarch and finally we do assessment. Research is meant to facilitate the development
  • All our monitoring and documentation are going to be based on participatory approaches. Research will combine qualitative and quantitative approaches
  • the logic model is important to plan the implementation and management of the project. It shows the linkages between activities, output.... it also helps in pointing out our gaps in between.
  • LIVES, AGP, PSNP- we try to collaborate with AGP in terms of capacity building. We avoided overlap of AGP sites and LIVES site, but then share results and interact, involve in capacity building...
  • How we reach policy makers is involving them in learning and advisory groups. Reach people through briefs, one to one communication
  • Most of the reasearch we do is diagnostic. If we are development oriented, what we need is action reseach. We then come out with lessons.

Comments by Simon Langan
  • Interest of the Ministry to work on irrigation is huge.
  • Case studies on agricultural water solutions in Ethiopia and experiences from them shows that there are various bottlenecks on the uptake, issues of pump and associated costs (eg. Tax), maintenance and spare parts provision
  • IFAD sponsored learning alliance experience, which we can learn from
  • Experiences from somewhere in Mekelle, the dam damage, and the wasted potential
  • The CRPs interst in water and ecosystem and their component in irrigation ( smallholder) good research outputs are expected from these
  • There are a lot of information and knowledge from different sources, FAO funded projects,
    • the use of mobile phones... as a way to send and collect information... are powerful instruments to use to transfer information
